The American Legion Auxiliary "50 Club"

Posted by Tracy Fortney on January 22, 2019 at 11:45 AM Comments comments (0)

What’s the 50 Club? You pick an available number between 1 and 50 and pay $1 for each of the 50 weeks ($50 total.) At each of our monthly membership meetings from December to October, we will pick 3 numbers. Each number pulled will win $20. At the final drawing in November, we will give out over $400 in additional prizes including a $200 grand prize. You must be up-to-date on your payments at the time of each monthly drawing for your number to be eligible. You may pick and pay for more than one number. You may also pay the total amount all at once or in smaller increments.

Please contact Amy or Jenny Welsh if you would like to keep your previous number or pick a new number. You will need to have given us at least $5 by the January 15 meeting to participate in the first drawing. We will be combining the December and January drawing at this meeting.

Auxiliary Membership

Ladies, if you are carrying an American Legion Auxiliary membership that says 2018, it is about to expire. Your membership is very important to us, and all of the many projects we try to accomplish each year. Many of you did not receive a renewal notice, including me; national and state departments of the American Legion Auxiliary have been made aware of this. Our senior dues are $32.00 and our junior dues are $10.00. You can write a check and mail them to our treasurer, Jennifer Welsh, 534 New Burg St., Granville, OH 43023. Please include any address or phone number changes so that I can keep our records updated. You can also leave your dues with an employee at the canteen. I stop in about twice a week to pick up any renewals or changes left there and mail them to you. We are always looking for new members, if you have a family member or friend who qualifies for membership, please encourage them to join. We are currently at 50% membership, a long way from goal, please consider taking the time to write your check to help support our veterans and our unit.

By the time you read this it will be well into the new year. I hope everyone had a great Christmas and brought in the new year with a bang. First I want to thank everyone who helped with the children's Christmas party. It was fun but several kids did not show up. Maybe next year we need a little more communication. It seemed like everything was falling on the same dates, so some things were canceled. Sorry about that, there's another reason we need more helpers, so everything can stay on track. There is always something to be done. I hope everyone is trying to stay healthy. Lots of crazy bugs floating around hard to stay away from them. Well Department of Ohio Mid-Winter meeting is just around the corner. The dates are Friday, January 25 with Leadership workshop from 2p-4p General session at 6:30pm and reconvene on Saturday Jan 26 and 9am at the Crowne Plaza on Doubletree Ave off Busch Blvd. On March 19, 2019 we will celebrate the Auxiliary's 100th Birthday. Look for invitations, letter or phone call sometime early March. Hope to see a lot of our members and guest there for a special event. Come and get involved in the Auxiliary in support of our Veterans. I think you will enjoy doing good for them. I don't know about you but I am looking forward to spring already, but in the meantime have fun in the rain or snow which ever life brings.

Centennial for the American Legion Birthday

Your centennial celebration committee is proud to announce the re-start of the Black Kats Club. This club was started soon after our post was chartered in 1919. The idea behind it is, members would get together to talk and socialize with fellow Vets. Everything that is considered as bad luck is part of the Black Kats program; walking under a ladder, an umbrella opened indoors, breaking a mirror, 3 lights on a match and you only meet on Friday the 13th. You must be a member of the American Legion Post 85 and the oldest members will be first on the list. There are only 13 members so the oldest will be members and any extras will be on a waiting list. If you were to become a member you must attend all meetings, there must be 13 at every dinner. To be excused is a rarity. I you miss and are not excused you be dropped from the club and next oldest on the wait list will be invited to join. The meetings will be at a local restaurant and those attending pay for their own meals and a good time is had by all.

The rules for the Black Kats, who meet on every Friday the 13th, with the first meeting being on Friday, September 13, 2019 are 1. No dues, 2. No officers, 3. No rules.

If this sounds like something that you would like to do call Jeff Lewis 740-334-3172 or call the post at 740-345-2346. The deadline for submitting your name to be in the renewed Black Kats Club is November 30, 2018.

Old Testament-Ecclesiastes 3:1-22 “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die, a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what has been planted, a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to breakup, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace; and a time to refrain from embracing.”

As we have entered the autumn of this year, let us be thankful for all we have received in this season. Our true wealth lies in our Spirit. As food nourishes our body, his word nourishes our Spirit.

Fall is here and so are a lot of projects in this program. I have Newark, Heath, and Granville working on projects for our veterans and children in our community. Patriotism starts with our youth. All schools received small flags to decorate their lawns for Patriot Day, Veterans Day and all other projects they choose. Newark High School will be helping fund raise for our Big Project which is fundraising for a support dog for a local veteran. McGuffey and Stevenson will gather personal size products for ditty bags at the Chillicothe veteran’s hospital. We will be going there on November 15, 2018. Come join us. We can’t forget “Make a Difference Day” and Halloween. November brings us Veterans Day. Breakfast at the post for Vets and their families from 7am to 9am. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving with your families and gear up for all the December madness. Remember to fly your flags to honor our fallen and supporting troops and also God is our foundation of America. Volunteers always needed and appreciated.

Holiday Greetings to all,

This is the time of year when we celebrate two holidays and really enjoy family and friends. At Thanksgiving, be thankful for the blessings that God has provided for you. At Christmas, don’t gloat over the material things, instead remember the reason for the season. Always, remember our troops who are protecting our great nation. Ask God to pour His blessings over them.

Special prayers are asked for Jean Anderson, Margie Anderson, Dora Armstrong, Shanda Dennis, Barbara Ford, Barb Griffin, Anne Seidel, Kay Steen, and Juanita Ziliox. I pray for those who are sick and shut-in and ask for God’s healing powers over them.

Our prayer for these 3 months: Heavenly Father, watch over us as we go through the holidays. Let us look to the skies from which cometh our help to get through these trying times for our nation. We pray for the safety of our troops across the world. Keep our veterans under your wings of safety. In Thy holy name, we pray.

Amen

For God and Country,

Lois Singleton

Auxiliary Chaplain
